Happy Dozinky Weekend!
I hope you are excited to enjoy all of the fun in New Prague for Dozinky Days. I know many of your children are in the parade tomorrow. I will be watching for them!
I wanted to send a quick note about reading in third grade. As your child makes the transition from "learning to read" to "loving to read" we are going to be exploring books that are a good fit for them, but most importantly, books that interest them. Your child will always have the choice of what book they are reading independently. I will work with them to make sure the books are a good fit and that they are comprehending what they read. At home I encourage you to do the same, remembering that they are still learning how to be a fluent reader, a skill that really takes time and practice to master.
Our classroom library is a wonderful resource for your child this year. The books in our classroom can always go home with your child. I just ask that they bring them to and from school each day so they can be reading from anywhere. If it seems like your child is struggling with reading, try duet reading with them. Either duet every other word, every other paragraph, or every other page. This will help build their fluency and their excitement about reading with you. If your child is struggling to find books, start by asking them what they are interested in, and maybe head to the public library to find books with them. I will be doing the same thing here in the classroom each week.
Finally, please remember that your child works VERY hard here in school all day. They are spending 90 minutes doing reading related learning each day, 20 minutes reading to self, and that is only what we do for reading! Find the best time for your child to read at night, and build this time up as a non-threatening, enjoyable activity. Soon your child will be asking to read! Together we can help your child build that confidence and love for reading!
If you ever have any questions about a series your child might be interested in, what you can be doing at home to support them, or what I am noticing about your child as a reader, please do not hesitate to ask!
